Pool Roof Collapses in Perm, 9 Dead

A concrete roof over a swimming pool in the Perm region collapsed Sunday, killing at least nine people -- including three children -- and injuring 12 others, officials said.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. at the indoor pool in Chusovoi, a village near the city of Perm, the Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement.

Late Sunday, rescuers were still working to lift concrete slabs out of the pool, which is owned by a metallurgical factory. The pool was built in 1995 and was housed in a room measuring 100 square meters, Interfax reported.

The Perm administration said it had opened an investigation into the cause of the collapse but did not suspect terrorism.

The incident echoed a similar collapse in February 2004 at Transvaal Park, a popular Moscow water park. A total of 28 people died and more than 100 others were injured.
