Markets Make Way For Supersize Mall

A market operator has received permission to replace two markets with what could become the city's largest shopping center, according to a decree signed by Mayor Yury Luzhkov.

Emeral, which previously ran an industrial market on part of the site, on the Moscow Ring Road near Kashirskoye Shosse, plans to invest $150 million to $200 million in the project, according to the company's deputy general director, Vlad Yusufov.

In addition to a hypermarket and boutiques, the 280,000-square-meter development will include a hotel and entertainment complex covering 44,000 square meters, he said.

Work is due to begin early next year.
