2 Arrested in Deadly Grozny Attack

ROSTOV-ON-DON -- Police in Chechnya arrested two militants wanted in connection with a 2004 attack that killed scores of people, soldiers and civilians, a federal Interior Ministry official said.

Spokesman Roman Shchekotin said police troops detained the two men Wednesday, though it was unclear where the arrest occurred.

The August 2004 attacks on police checkpoints and polling stations in Grozny killed at least two dozen people and came just days ahead of the region's presidential election.

Also Wednesday, police detained a suspected rebel wanted for staging attacks on police posts in southern Chechnya, the regional Interior Ministry said.

Across the border in neighboring Dagestan, meanwhile, Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Musaev said police near the city of Khasavyurt detained a man wanted for a series of attacks on federal forces in recent years.
