Separatist Envoys Appointed Abroad

The Chechen separatist government has appointed citizens of Georgia, Turkey and Germany as its envoys to those countries, Kommersant reported Wednesday.

Rebel envoy Akhmed Zakayev, who lives in London, told the newspaper that the separatist leadership was attempting to revive foreign relations after leader Aslan Maskhadov was killed by the federal special services in March.

"We have been forced to seek candidates among the citizens of those countries because it is very difficult and not safe for Chechens to be representatives abroad," Zakayev said.

Kommersant speculated that the main task of the new envoys would be to try to discredit Chechnya's parliamentary elections in the West. The vote is scheduled for late November.

Kommersant said Medet Onlu was the new envoy to Turkey, German Patsatsia was the envoy to Georgia, and Ekkerhard Maas was the envoy to Germany.
