Ivanov Dismisses Iran Report

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov on Monday dismissed a British newspaper report that Russian specialists had helped Iran develop long-range missiles.

"Nonsense, lunacy," Ivanov told reporters in New Delhi when asked to comment on the report in The Sunday Telegraph.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday also denied the report and suggested that Iran had been assisted by Western companies at earlier stages of its nuclear program. "If we go deeper in history and look at who did what, there would be more questions related to Western companies," Lavrov told reporters. He did not elaborate.

Ivanov said Russia honored its nonproliferation commitments and that it was in Russia's national interest to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

Ivanov arrived in India on Saturday to attend a joint Indian-Russian war game, but he cut his visit short Monday because bad weather made it impossible to hold the naval part of the exercises.

Before his departure, he announced that Russia would host war games with India, Britain and the United States next year.
