Georgia Names Foreign Minister

TBILISI -- Georgia on Thursday appointed Gela Bezhuashvili, a U.S.-educated senior presidential aide, as foreign minister, and analysts expected him to stick to the pro-Western policies of his sacked predecessor.

President Mikheil Saakashvili dismissed French-born diplomat Salome Zurabishvili late Wednesday.

Bezhuashvili, 38, previously had a brief stint as defense minister under Saakashvili and also served as a deputy defense minister in the government of veteran leader Eduard Shevardnadze.

He speaks fluent English, Spanish and Russian and graduated from law school in the United States.

Zurabishvili was dismissed because of complaints about her management style, not because of policy differences.

Zurabishvili addressed a rally of about 4,000 supporters in Tbilisi on Thursday, saying she would remain in Georgia but was coy about what she would do next. "I'm not going into the opposition. I'm not going anywhere. I will decide later what to do," she said.
