Nobels for Yushchenko, Saakashvili?

WASHINGTON -- Two prominent U.S. senators said Wednesday they had nominated Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator John McCain said in a letter to the Nobel Institute that the two presidents "have won popular support for the universal values of democracy, individual liberty and civil rights."

Saakashvili and Yushchenko both came to power after mass demonstrations protesting fraudulent votes in their countries.

"Recognizing these men with the peace prize would honor not only their historic roles in Georgia and Ukraine, but would also offer hope and inspiration to those seeking freedom in lands still denied it," the letter said.
