Ufa, Tolyatti Arrests

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russian authorities have arrested three Uzbek citizens who are wanted for their alleged involvement in spring terrorist attacks in Uzbekistan that killed 47 people, police officials said Tuesday.

Tulkun Babayev, Erkin Babayev and Bakhrom Sultanov were arrested in May and June in Ufa and Tolyatti, Yury Demidov of the Interior Ministry's organized crime department told reporters.

Meanwhile, 15 suspected al-Qaida-linked militants reappeared in Uzbekistan's highest court Tuesday on trial for their alleged involvement in the spring attacks.

Paper Sues Kiriyenko

MOSCOW (MT) -- Novaya Gazeta, which is being sued by Sergei Kiriyenko, the presidential envoy to the Volga Federal District, retaliated Tuesday with a suit against Kiriyenko, Interfax reported.

Kiriyenko has accused the newspaper and journalist Georgy Rozhnov of impugning his reputation with an article in June that suggested Kiriyenko had siphoned off money from International Monetary Fund loans to the government in the 1990s.

Novaya Gazeta's countersuit claims that Kiriyenko disparaged its reputation when he told NTV that the newspaper knowingly spread false information, Interfax reported.

2 Officers Killed

MAKHACHKALA, Dagestan (AP) -- Gunmen on Tuesday killed two senior police officers heading to work together in the Caspian Sea port of Kaspiisk, Dagestan, officials said.

Three masked gunmen shot them dead at point-blank range and then drove away in a car, Dagestani police spokesman Abdul Musayev said.

14 Dead in Azeri Crash

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) -- A LUKoil gas tanker truck and a minibus collided on a road in Azerbaijan, killing 14 people, authorities said.

The minibus collided with the truck after maneuvering to avoid another vehicle that pulled in front of it.

Tajik Official Charged

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (AP) -- The head of Tajikistan's UN-backed drug control agency has been charged with illegal arms possession, tax evasion and fraud, the chief prosecutor said.

Lieutenant General Gafor Mirzoyev was arrested on Aug. 6 in Dushanbe after police seized more than 3,000 weapons from him, including a Stinger anti-aircraft missile.

French Rock Star

PARIS (AP) -- Lithuanian authorities have agreed to extradite a French rock star convicted of manslaughter in the beating death of his actress girlfriend and he could be returned home within months to serve his sentence, judicial officials said.

Bertrand Cantat, lead singer for popular French group Noir Desir (Black Desire), was convicted in March in the beating death of Marie Trintignant in a hotel room in Vilnius.

Yeltsin Meets King

OSLO (AP) -- Former President Boris Yeltsin met with Norway's King Harald V and Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik before traveling to a Norwegian island for vacation.

Yeltsin said he had a "fruitful meeting" with the Norwegian prime minister before a brief audience with the king Monday. He also lunched with Bondevik.
