Blast Misses Russian Club Director

KIEV -- A Russian who heads a club aimed at promoting Russian-Ukrainian ties was attacked in Kiev in what police described as an assassination attempt, news reports said Sunday.

Maksim Kurochkin, an executive director of Kiev's Russian Club, was getting in his car early Sunday when a nearby car exploded.

Kurochkin was not hurt, but his two bodyguards were hospitalized with serious injuries, Interfax said, citing police in Kiev. Police said the explosion appeared to have been aimed at Kurochkin.

A preliminary investigation found that the car was registered to a false name.

Interfax said Kurochkin is a well-known businessman who used to deal with the energy sector and the hotel business. He now runs the Russian Club, a nongovernmental organization opened this summer under an agreement between Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and President Vladimir Putin.
