Blaze at Tank Depot Kills One Soldier

A fire broke out Monday at a tank depot for an elite military unit, killing one serviceman and injuring another, the Defense Ministry said.

The fire occurred at a depot outside Moscow where tanks belonging to the Kantemirov division are stored, the ministry's press service said.

Ministry spokesman Nikolai Deryabin said a soldier was killed and an officer injured in the blaze, Interfax reported. He said three T-80 tanks and six pieces of other equipment were found to be destroyed after the fire was put out.

Interfax reported that ammunition on two of the tanks had exploded but that the blasts caused no casualties. Fears of such explosions hampered efforts to fight the fire, it said.

Sergei Morozov, first deputy prosecutor of the Moscow Military District, said in televised remarks that a criminal investigation has been opened.

Two weeks ago, a naval arsenal in the Far East caught fire, injuring at least 13 people and causing blasts that destroyed about 20 residences.
