6th Woman Strangled in Northwest Moscow

A 42-year-old woman was found strangled to death in northwestern Moscow on Monday, raising new fears that a serial killer might be on the loose.

The woman is at least the sixth to be strangled in that part of town since the beginning of the month. But police said Monday that they still do not believe that the killings are the work of a serial killer.

"If we had such information, we would have asked the public to provide information to help us to track down the criminal," police spokesman Pavel Klimovsky told Interfax.

The body of the latest victim was found at about 6 a.m. Monday in the yard of a kindergarten on Otradny Proyezd, Interfax reported. She had been stripped naked and her clothes were lying nearby. Police suspected that she was strangled at about 2 a.m.

It was not immediately clear whether she had been sexually assaulted. Police did not release her name. The bodies of previous victims also were found naked or partially naked. Many of them had been sexually assaulted.

Two other women also have been strangled in other parts of Moscow this month, but police have made arrests in those cases.

While police continue their separate investigations into the northwest stranglings, their superiors at the Interior Ministry are considering combining them into a single investigation for a serial killer, Interfax reported.
