Ambassador Goes to Iraq

Iraq's ambassador to Russia is headed for Baghdad, but before he left Moscow he ordered several weapons stored at his embassy handed over to the police, Interfax reported.

Ambassador Abbas Khalaf left Friday for Amman, Jordan, en route to Iraq, an Iraqi Embassy official said.

He would not disclose the reason for Khalaf's trip.

Interfax reported last month that Khalaf planned to go to Baghdad in the near future for consultations with the U.S.-led interim civil administration.

At the time, Interfax quoted Khalaf as saying, "As a realist, I understand that these consultations will deal with my further holding the post of Iraqi ambassador to Moscow, although I do not know the details of the summons."

Other ambassadors who served Saddam Hussein's government have received similar summonses.

Interfax, citing a police source, reported Saturday that the police had been summoned to the Iraqi Embassy on Friday and had been handed five Kalashnikov assault rifles, six pistols and a large quantity of ammunition.

A police spokeswoman said she had no information on the report. Embassy officials had no immediate comment.
