Robertson Arrives for Meeting of the NATO-Russia Council

NATO Secretary-General Lord Robertson was to arrive Monday night for a visit culminating with a session of the NATO-Russia Council at the ambassadorial level.

The Tuesday meeting will be the first such session of the NATO-Russia Council to be held in Moscow since its establishment last May. This gives the event "a certain symbolic importance," Robertson was quoted as saying in Kommersant's Monday issue.

Members of the council will discuss upcoming NATO-Russia Council ministerial meetings in June and review the council's performance, NATO said in a statement.

They will also meet with Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov and leadership from the Federation Council, the statement said.

Robertson will hold a separate meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

The Tuesday council session will demonstrate that Russia and NATO are achieving a "new quality of relations" based on "mutual interests in finding joint responses to new challenges and threats," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko told reporters last week.
