Apartment Building Blaze Kills at Least 7

A fire tore through an underground garage at the construction site of an apartment building on 79 Ulitsa Aviatsionnaya on Monday, killing at least seven people, emergency officials said.

The fire broke out in a storage area on the first floor of the garage in the upscale building in northwest Moscow, Itar-Tass reported.

The Moscow department of the Emergency Situations Ministry said preliminary information suggested that seven people were killed. Itar-Tass put the death toll at 10 people and said one was seriously injured. The injured were believed to be construction workers, Interfax said.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

Fire officials told TVS television that the blaze was particularly difficult to fight due to a huge amount of smoke and the high temperature. The station showed images of black smoke pouring out of above-ground windows in the brick building.

Interfax reported that six people have already been killed in construction accidents on the site. In December, three people died when a rope on a movable platform broke, sending them plunging to the ground from the 15th floor.
