Communist Party Turns to Alfyorov

Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov has asked Zhores Alfyorov, who won the Nobel Prize for physics in 2000, to take the No. 2 in the party's list for State Duma elections in December, Vedomosti reported Wednesday.

Former Krasnodar Governor Nikolai Kondratenko, who is known for his anti-Semitic remarks, is tipped to run in the No. 3 spot,Vedomosti quoted an unnamed Communist source as saying.

After overseeing Krasnodar from 1997 to 2000, Kondratenko chose not to stand for re-election and now represents the region in the Federation Council.

Communist economist Sergei Glazyev is another candidate for the No. 3 spot, Vedomosti said.

However, both possible candidates could still be overlooked in favor of a prominent cultural figure or military man, the Communist source said.

The top three names on the party list are important in elections because voters cast ballots for parties based on the first names they see on the ballot. The number of votes a party wins helps determine how many Duma seats it gets.

Communist deputies refused to deny or confirm the report Wednesday.
