Business in Brief

Kiev Keen on Pipeline MOSCOW (MT) -- Ukraine has agreed to build the largest section of a new $1 billion pipeline to carry greater volumes of natural gas from Turkmenistan to Ukraine via Russia, a senior Ukrainian official was quoted by Dow Jones as saying Thursday. Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov proposed the 1,070-kilometer pipeline at a meeting with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma on Saturday. The planned route would trace the Caspian Sea shore through Kazakhstan to the Saratov region in southern Russia. Kuchma ""has agreed to the project and ordered us to get prepared for the work,"" Yury Boyko, head of state oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy, was quoted by Dow Jones as saying late Wednesday. Naftogaz will send a team to Turkmenistan next month to study the project. Niyazov suggested the pipeline project days after Turkmenistan and Russia had signed an agreement that anticipates Russian gas purchases at 1.8 trillion cubic meters within the next 25 years.
