Spain's Zara Clothes Label Arrives in Moscow

Spanish clothing retailer Zara opened its first Russian store in Moscow on Wednesday, the company said in a press release.

The 1,500-square-meter store -- selling men's, women's and children's clothing -- opened in the MEGA Mall, just south of the city at the intersection of Kaluzhskoye Shosse and the Moscow Ring Road. Developed by Swedish furniture retailer IKEA, the 150,000-square-meter MEGA Mall is the largest shopping center in Eastern Europe.

The opening of the Zara store follows the signing of a partnership agreement in 2002 between Spain's Inditex Group, which includes Zara and Finnish retailer Stockmann Group. Stockmann, the first Western retailer to enter the Russian market, has been operating on the Russian market since 1989.

The Stockmann Group has eight department stores, six in Finland, one in Moscow and one in Tallinn, Estonia.

Zara is controlled by Spain's largest retail sales network, Industria de Diseco Textil, or Inditex, which owns the Zara, Pull and Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius and Oysho brands.

Inditex has 1,565 outlets in 45 countries, including the new Zara store in Moscow, the company said.

Zara operates about 520 stores in 33 countries.
