Putin Votes, Rushes Home to Puppies

President Vladimir Putin was in a hurry to vote in parliamentary polls on Sunday -- he needed to get back home to his favorite dog Connie's newborn puppies.

"We were up half of the night taking care of the delivery," Putin's wife, Lyudmila, dressed in a beige suit, told reporters huddling in the snow outside of the Institute of Chemical Physics on Ulitsa Kosygina, where the couple voted.

Beaming, she announced that Connie, a Labrador, had delivered eight puppies -- six black and two "pale."

Putin, wearing a black suit, looked surprised when asked who he had voted for.

"I think that would be seen as campaigning, but my preference is well-known," he said, referring to his support for the pro-Kremlin United Russia party.

Connie was given to Putin by Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu, a leader of United Russia.
