Newspaper Editor Arrested in Kursk

The editor of a Kursk newspaper critical of the regional prosecutor has been arrested in what critics say is a violation of media freedom.

Sergei Savelyev, editor of the Svobodny Golos Kurska, was detained on Dec. 8 on suspicion of orchestrating an attack against a local prosecutor, Sergei Iosipchuk, who had accused Savelyev of publishing State Duma campaigning content without identifying it as advertisements, Savelyev's deputy, Natalia Safonenko, said by telephone from Kursk on Wednesday.

Iosipchuk said an unidentified man grabbed him by the collar in a park and ordered him to sit under a bridge the next day instead of going to work at about midnight Dec. 3. That was the same day Iosipchuk accused Savelyev of breaking the election law.

Safonenko said she believes Savelyev was targeted after the newspaper exposed alleged wrongdoing by regional prosecutor Alexander Babichev.

Kommersant asserted the reports were part of a failed bid by Savelyev to win a seat on the Kursk city council.
