Belarus Renews Zavadsky Search

MINSK, Belarus -- Prosecutors have resumed an investigation into the July 2000 disappearance of a cameraman working for ORT television, an official said.

Dmitry Zavadsky went missing after he left for Minsk airport to meet a Russian colleague and is feared dead. No body has ever been found.

Ivan Branchel, deputy head of the organized crime and corruption division of the Federal Prosecutor's Office, said Monday that the investigation was continuing but didn't specify what motivated the renewed inquiry.

But Zavadsky's wife, Svetlana, said it might have been because of an independent probe by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which released a report on disappearances in Belarus earlier this year.

In March 2002, four security service agents were convicted of Zavadsky's abduction, allegedly for personal reasons, but his relatives say it was ordered by top government officials for stories that irritated authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko's regime.
