Powerful Quake Shakes Siberia

A powerful earthquake shook southern Siberia on Wednesday, damaging some buildings in the mountainous Altai republic and further fraying nerves following two quakes over the weekend, officials said. No casualties were reported.

The quake struck shortly after 5 a.m. Moscow time and its epicenter was about 40 kilometers from the town of Kosh-Agach, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Maria Ordynskaya said.

Ordynskaya said the magnitude of the quake was between 7 and 8; the Hong Kong Observatory estimated it at 7.3. The same region was struck by two strong quakes Saturday that destroyed hundreds of homes.

Wednesday's quake cut power to Kosh-Agach and cracked walls in the regional capital, Gorno-Altaisk, where residents fled their homes when they felt the earth shake, news agencies reported.

President Vladimir Putin ordered Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu to travel to the area to lead aid efforts. Shoigu said more than 140 tremors had shaken Altai in recent days.
