Bovina Upsets Capriati in Kremlin Cup

Yelena Bovina of Russia staged a major upset Wednesday, eliminating top-seeded Jennifer Capriati 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (3-7) in the second round of the $2.3 million Kremlin Cup.

It was Capriati's first match since she lost to eventual champion Justine Henin-Hardenne in a dramatic semifinal of the U.S. Open on Sept. 6. She withdrew from last week's Shanghai Open due to a shoulder injury before making a last-minute decision to play here.

Bovina missed a chance to take an early lead in the match when Capriati saved a break point in the second game of the first set.

Capriati opened the second set with a break, but the Russian showed no signs of giving up and fought back with two breaks to level the match at 1-1.

Bovina came back from love-40 on her serve in the first game of the third set, but Capriati prevailed on a deuce with a crosscourt volley for an early lead. The Russian leveled at 2-2 but the American went up 5-3 with a break in the seventh game.

Down on her serve 30-40 in the ninth game, Bovina saved a match point and leveled the set at 5-5 when Capriati double faulted at love-40 in the 10th game. Bovina held at love and Capriati save two match points to force a tiebreaker, which she lost.
