Rushailo Injured in Car Crash

Security Council chief Vladimir Rushailo was hospitalized Monday after a car accident in the Far East in which six people were killed, officials said.

Also Monday, officials said the mayor of Novgorod was killed in a car accident.

Rushailo and Mikhail Mashkovtsev, governor of the northeastern Kamchatka region, were among nine people injured, the regional emergency department said. Rushailo suffered a concussion, and Mashkovtsev suffered a concussion and a broken leg, a duty officer said.

Both officials were in satisfactory condition, said Viktor Beltsov, spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry.

The accident occurred when a sport utility vehicle crashed into the officials' motorcade as they were traveling from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Kamchatka, to a nearby airport.

The Security Council is an advisory body that helps formulate Kremlin policy on security issues. Before taking the council's helm, Rushailo served as interior minister.

Meanwhile, Novgorod Mayor Alexander Korsunov was killed in the crash in the Novgorod region on Sunday evening, said Natalia Melkova, a spokeswoman for the regional government.

Investigators have determined who was responsible for the accident and have opened a criminal case, according to a statement on the regional administration's web site. No other details were immediately available.
