90 Anti-Capitalists Detained at Rally

Police detained 90 protesters during clashes at an unauthorized rally of 400 young anti-capitalists Sunday at Triumfalnaya Ploshchad, Interfax reported.

Police found Molotov cocktails on some of the detainees and confiscated flags that others had used as weapons, Interfax said. The protesters may be charged with hooliganism and resisting the authorities, Interfax cited the Moscow police press office as saying.

The rally was blocked off by hundreds of police officers, many in riot gear. Clashes erupted when a group of protesters tried to break through a police line by throwing homemade smoke bombs, The Associated Press reported.

The rally was a part of a broader action dubbed Anti-Capitalism-2002 and implemented by the leftist National Bolshevik Party and two communist youth groups, the Union of Communist Youth and the Vanguard of Red Youth.
