Moscow, Hanoi Talk Satellite Launch

HANOI, Vietnam -- Vietnam's telecoms market regulator said Thursday it has held talks with Russian space experts to help launch the country's first communications satellite.

A spokesman for the Directorate General of Posts and Telecommunications said experts from the Russian Aviation and Space Agency approached the DGPT earlier this week and both sides discussed the project in Hanoi.

"The Russians are willing to work with Vietnam on the satellite project. President [Vladimir] Putin first discussed it with Vietnamese leaders during his visit, and the talks this week are a follow-up," the spokesman said. "But we have not selected any partner."

He said several foreign firms had approached the DGPT after the government had approved the $200 million project earlier this year to launch Vietnam's first communications satellite by 2005.

The spokesman declined to name the firms in talks.
