Ivanov: 3 Russians at Guantanamo

Three Russian citizens are being held by U.S. authorities at the Guantanamo Bay prison for captured Taliban and al-Qaida fighters, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Monday.

Ivanov said in remarks broadcast by ORT television that he reported to President Vladimir Putin on the results of a delegation the Defense Ministry sent to the Cuban base to determine the nationality of some prisoners who had been identified by U.S. officials as Russians.

Speaking after his meeting with Putin in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, Ivanov said the three Russians were taken prisoner in Afghanistan "with weapons in their hands." He said the Prosecutor General's Office would decide whether to initiate legal action against them.

The U.S. military says the 300 captives at Guantanamo Bay include fighters from the al-Qaida terrorist network and the Taliban regime. Some may be returned to their home countries.
