Düsseldorf Leaves Mark on Moscow

Messe Düsseldorf, one of Germany's largest trade fair organizers, is constructing a 30,000-square-meter building at the Krasnaya Presnya ExpoCenter and is investing 10.25 million euros ($9 million) in the project, company officials announced Tuesday.

The building will have 15,000 square meters of display space, as well as a congress center and offices, and is due to open in mid-September. Messe D?sseldorf's partners, including the expocenter, will contribute the remainder of the financing for the building, which will cost a total of 26 million euros.

Messe Düsseldorf is trying to accommodate more visitors at its trade fairs in Moscow, which are usually sold out, said Bernd Jablonowski, head of Messe Düsseldorf in Russia.

"The interest of Russian and foreign exhibitors is so great that we can't fit them all in," Jablonowski said at a news conference to mark the second annual Düsseldorf business fair in Moscow.

Russia accounted for about 30 percent of Messe D?sseldorf's sales abroad, Jablonowski said.

Relations between Moscow and the North Rhein-Westphalia region, of which Düsseldorf is the capital, have grown steadily in the past 10 years, Düsseldorf Mayor Joachim Erwin said.

He urged Russian business to use D?sseldorf's trade fairs to market their own products and services.

"Düsseldorf is an international center of business and trade in the center of Europe," Erwin said. "Forty percent of the population of the European Union lives within 500 kilometers."
