Zimbabwe Vote Count Commences

HARARE, Zimbabwe -- Two independent civic groups Tuesday roundly condemned Zimbabwe's presidential election as fundamentally flawed, chaotic and confused, as ballot counting got under way and opposition supporters complained of being chased away from the polls by police.

"The election well has been poisoned to such an extent that there is unlikely to be any other result" than a victory for President Robert Mugabe, said Brian Raftopolous, head of a collection of church and civic groups known as the Crisis in Zimbabwe Committee.

Officials delivered ballot boxes to central counting stations established in the country's 120 voting districts Tuesday morning. Eddie Mamutse, a government spokesman, said thousands of workers began counting votes at 7 a.m. at stations across the country.

First results are expected Wednesday.
