Grozny Looks to Fight Corruption

Magomed Vakhayev, labor and social welfare minister for the Moscow-backed Chechen adminstration, announced new measures Monday to combat corruption in Chechnya.

Vakhayev said his ministry would boost efforts to rein in child allowance payments, which he said were being abused in Chechnya. Throughout Russia, small allowances are paid to families on a per-child basis.

Vakhayev said some 400,000 children were on the ministry's rolls, while the actual number was likely much lower, according Itar-Tass.

Vakhayev also said the heads of three regional labor departments were dismissed for financial abuses, Itar-Tass reported. The agency gave no further details.
