Seeking Words of Wisdom With the Click of a Mouse

Offering pearls of wisdom from some of the world's greatest thinkers, Russia's aphorism web sites are a break from the usual Internet babble.

With 18,500 proverbs from 3,700 authors -- including writers, philosophers, statesmen and other luminaries -- aphorism.ru will never leave you at loss for words.

The front page of the site, at www.aphorism.ru, features some selected expressions, while a list of special sections is featured in the upper left-hand corner.

Samiye Samiye, or the Best, has the site's top 20 themes, top 100 authors and top 100 aphorisms.

Love, of course, is No. 1 in the top 20 themes, with more than 9,200 aphorisms devoted to the topic. In a close second is women.

Stanislav Lech leads the top 100 list of authors, with more than 1,700 of the Polish writer's sayings catalogued on the site. The No. 2 spot is occupied by nobody, since many of the site's sayings are unattributed.

The search engine allows users to find aphorisms by topic, starting with Aviaputeshestviye, or Air Travel, and ending in Yasnost, or Clarity.

But aphorism.ru isn't the only such page on the Russian Internet -- there's also the similarly named www.aforism.ru.

At this page, sayings are catalogued by themes listed on the front of the home page, starting with avtobus, or bus, and covering hundreds of topics. Unfortunately, the list stops at the Cyrillic letter L -- that's as far as the site's designers have got in cataloguing the huge resource.

In the left-hand corner are Special Sections, featuring Chinese Aphorisms; clicking on the link brings you to a special page featuring a statue of Buddha and the wisdom of Confucius. The Special Sections also features a top 20 list of the site's favorite authors -- with Lech, the Polish writer, again in the No. 1 spot.
