Official: Cellular Use to Double by 2003

The number of people using mobile phones in Russia is expected to almost double by the end of the year, a senior official said Tuesday.

First Deputy Communications Minister Yury Pavlenko told reporters at the opening of a telecommunications conference in St. Petersburg that Russia now has 8.5 million mobile-phone subscribers, Interfax reported. He said that number was expected to increase to 14 million by year's end and jump to 28 million by 2010.

Investment in Russia's telecommunications sector was expected to total about $3 billion this year, up from $2.2 billion last year, Interfax reported Pavlenko as saying.

Earlier this month, Norway's Nordea financial group announced it would provide more than $200 million for Moscow's new mobile-phone operator, Sonic Duo.
