Malaysia Mulls Sukhoi Buy

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Malaysia will send teams to Russia and the United States to weigh the purchase of either the Sukhoi SU-30MK Flanker or Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornets multi-role fighter, the New Straits Times newspaper said Saturday.

Defense Minister Najib Razak was quoted by the newspaper as saying the teams would evaluate both fighters and then submit reports to the government.

"They will be away for a week or two depending on the situation and availability of information and support," Najib was quoted as saying in the central state of Pahang on Friday.

"After completing their evaluation, the teams will submit their reports to me and I will discuss the matter with Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad before the government makes a decision," he said.

The first team will leave for Russia in the middle of February to look at the Sukhoi fighter, while a second team will go to the United States next month to see the Boeing, said Najib.

When asked if the purchase would be made this year, Najib said it would depend on a number of factors, including the government's financial capability.

No financial details were given, and Defense Ministry officials could not be reached for comment Saturday.
