Look Beyond the Capital With Regional News Site

Despite what residents of the capital may think, Moscow is not the center of the universe. And although it may be the center of Russia, there is still a lot going on in the regions.

For news addicts, or arrivals to the capital who want to know what's going on back home, www.regions.ru has the news you need in an easy to use format.

"Founded in 1999, Regions.ru offers information from our many information partners in almost all regions of the country, as well as exclusive news from our own regional correspondents," the site says. "Equal attention is paid to all information from all the regions."

The site works in cooperation with news agencies and media throughout Russia, as well as local government administrations and the Association for the Defense of the Information Rights of Investors.

The main page is devoted to breaking news, with each bulletin beginning with the name of the region it is from, and articles arrive every few minutes from all over the country. The site covers all the bases -- business and finance, politics, environmental issues and even beauty pageants are all given ample coverage.

On the left of the page, news is divided into topics such as politics, business, elections and health. Further down the column, news is divided geographically according to federal district, and below that is another section with news divided again geographically, but this time more specifically and including Belarus.

Under the Regional Resources heading is a list of other web sites that carry news from the regions.

To the right of the page, Regions.ru invites readers to participate in a survey called "Most Memorable Governors," where participants choose which regional leader was featured most often in the press in the last week, which fared the best and which fared poorly.
