Independent Media Eyes Sem Dnei

Derk Sauer, CEO of Independent Media, the parent company of The Moscow Times, said Saturday that Independent Media is interested in bidding for Gazprom's Sem Dnei publishing house when and if it is offered for sale.

"We would like to participate in the tender for Sem Dnei and contacted Gazprom-Media to find out the details," Sauer said at the media conference.

Sem Dnei, which formerly belonged to Vladimir Gusinsky and is expected to be offered for sale by Gazprom later this month, publishes the Sem Dnei illustrated television guide, the Karavan Istory monthly glossy and the Itogi weekly news magazine.

Sem Dnei's current ownership structure is unclear. When Gazprom took over Gusinsky's assets last year, it obtained a 50 percent plus one share stake, while Sem Dnei CEO Dmitry Biryukov had a 25 percent plus one share and Gusinsky kept the rest.

Sauer said he had sent a letter to Gazprom-Media chairman Alexander Dybal asking for information about the bidding process. In response, Dybal wrote that details will become clear "in a few weeks," Sauer said in a telephone interview Sunday.
