Gordeyev: Farms Short of Machines

Russia has enough seed for this year's spring sowing campaign but faces a shortage of farm machinery, Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev said Tuesday.

"We had accumulated 100 percent of the necessary seed by Feb. 1 ... a total of 7.2 million tons," Gordeyev, who is also deputy prime minister, told a Federation Council committee.

"We only have the traditional shortage of maize seeds, but we will solve the problem through imports from Ukraine and Moldova," he added.

Gordeyev said that farmers now have just 50 percent to 55 percent of the agricultural machinery necessary for sowing and harvesting this season.

He said that the government plans to make the best use of existing machinery and to guarantee necessary repairs. It also plans to buy combine harvesters and tractors to lease to farmers at good rates.
