EU Welcomes Zakayev Ruling

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution that includes a brief amendment welcoming the Danish government's decision not to extradite Chechen rebel envoy Akhmed Zakayev to Moscow.

The amendment, passed Thursday, noted there were "no substantial charges" against Zakayev, and it called on Russia to "put all its efforts into finding a political solution to the Chechen crisis."

The Foreign Ministry accused the European Union's assembly Saturday of double standards in the war against terrorism.

"The touching concern by the European Parliament about the fate of A. Zakayev ... is impossible to qualify other than as direct support for accomplices of international terrorism," the ministry said, warning the EU assembly about "the inadmissibility and danger of double standards in relation to terrorists."
