2 Blasts Shake Vladikavkaz Stadium

VLADIKAVKAZ, North Ossetia -- Two explosions rocked a stadium Sunday in Vladikavkaz following a soccer match, a top police official said Monday.

Acting North Ossetian Interior Minister Soslan Sikoyev said investigators were considering various motives for two back-to-back blasts, including simple hooliganism. However, the prosecutor's office said the main motive under consideration was terrorism.

The explosions occurred two to three seconds apart Sunday at the Spartak stadium in Vladikavkaz, about an hour after the end of a match between soccer teams Alania and Rotor. One explosive was planted beneath a sewage manhole near the entrance to the stadium, while another was planted about 15 meters away in a metal lamppost. There were no reports of injuries. Investigators said that if the kickoff had not been put forward an hour shortly before the game, there would have been many casualties as fans left the stadium.
