Ukraine Calls for Halt to U.S. Meat

KIEV -- Ukraine plans to ban imports of U.S. meat products from Feb. 15, Ukrainian Prime Minister Anatoly Kinakh said Wednesday.

"We plan to ban imports of meat products produced in the United States," Kinakh told reporters. He added that the ban could be imposed after a request by Ukrainian veterinary services.

This month, Ukraine's veterinary inspectorate put a temporary ban on imports of U.S. poultry because of the use of antibiotics in fodder.

An inspectorate official also said experts were concerned about a special chemical compound used as an insecticide for poultry carcasses during transport from the United States to Ukraine.
