The Soothsayer

It's only taken 13 weeks, but I am now ahead by the amazing sum of $9, a feat aided with two winners from three predictions last week. Manchester United beat Blackburn but came back to earth Tuesday with a bump when it lost at home to Liverpool 1-0 in a closely fought battle. The draw between Leeds and Arsenal was my other success.

The charity bet Haditovski lost last week, 9 lengths behind first place. We did manage to get 12/1 when it finished at 8/1, but that matters very little when the horse doesn't win.

Last week's NFL picks did not fair too well either, New England was a tie on the handicap, so your money should be returned. The Ravens were disappointing in Pittsburgh after their big win in Miami, Philly on the road upset my prediction and the Vegas gamble, Chicago. I also predicted a 19-24 win margin for St. Louis at 7.00 - 6/1. Close, but no cigar -- the win was by 28 points.

It's the English FA cup that takes the spotlight this week, with easily the most outstanding fixture being the visit to Highbury of Liverpool for the second time in two weeks. After Liverpool's hard-fought win against Manchester United it will be up for this one, but I see it ending in a draw at 3.50 - 5/2.

There's only one thing they are talking about across the pond this weekend and that's the conference championship games. The Superbowl betting looks like a one horse race with St. Louis the favorite at 1.40 - 2/5 and shortening, next best is Pittsburgh at 4.00 - 3/1 and the others are at 11.00 - 10/1.

The kitty now stands at a huge $209, showing a whopping $9 profit on the season so far. I'm letting this go to my head as there is nothing worthy of a bet of the week. I'm just going for an outside chance $10 treble to see if my luck really has changed.

Arsenal and Liverpool to draw (3.50 - 5/2). This match looks to be a corker on the face of it, but I've got a feeling it's going to be a dull, boring draw, maybe even goalless but a draw never the less. Both teams know each other's strengths and weaknesses so well I just think they will cancel each other out.

AFC Championship game - Pittsburgh (- 8.5) to win at home to New England. A big margin, but the Patriots were unimpressive at home, whereas Pittsburgh dominated the excellent Baltimore defense without the services of Jerome Bettis. My prediction on the margin is Pittsburgh to win by 13 to 18 points at 5.00 - 4/1.

NFC Championship game - St.Louis (-11.5) to win at home to Philadelphia. I would love to pick Philly for this game, it deserves a shot at the Superbowl for its efforts in the playoffs. However, Kurt Warner after his recent illness was gifted an easy game by the Green Bay offense, which just kept on turning the ball over. He should be fitter and better prepared this week, and with the Rams impressive home record, they should cover the spread. I don't believe it will be as many as 28 points this week, but maybe a winning margin of between 13 to 18 at 5.00 - 4/1 is more realistic.
