Ramstore Expanding Into Global USA Retail Space

Turkish retail and construction giant Ramenka is set to open a chain of supermarkets in buildings belonging to Global USA -- a deal that has sparked talk of a closer alliance.

Ramenka, which runs the Ramstore supermarket chain, has rented premises in four stores belonging to Global USA, a clothing and food retailer.

The new supermarkets are slated to open in March and will form the first phase of Ramstore's 2002 expansion program, Ramenka spokeswoman Saba Karabei said Wednesday.

The company plans to open a total of 10 new supermarkets and hypermarkets this year, she said.

Global USA, contrary to earlier reports, will not be opening its own outlets in Ramstore shops, Karabei said.

"Our relationship is purely that of landlord and tenant, there is no talk of a partnership," she said.

Global USA's staple product -- cheap clothes -- would see little popularity in the Ramstore shops, which offer mid-range priced garments, said an official of a major retailer.

The official, who declined to be identified, said the deal is likely part of Ramstore's goal of eventually purchasing Global USA's buildings.

Oleg Voitsekhovsky, head of the project research center with the Russky Proyekt company, said retail companies are actively seeking strategic partnerships to better "show off" their businesses.

"Exotic" alliances and mergers can be expected in the near future, he said.

Ramstore has rented property in Global USA stores at the following four addresses: 1,950 square meters at 27 Ulitsa Menzhinskov, 402 square meters at 12/2 Simyonovsky Val, 1,040 square meters at 23B Ulitsa Krasnya Presnya and 1,752 square meters at 112/1 Leningradskoye Shosse.

Last week, Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov signed off on a deal to provide Ramenka with a plot of land on Pravoberezhnaya Ulitsa at the intersection of Leningradskoye Shosse and the Moscow Ring Road.

Ramenka paid $2.5 million for the lease and is planning to build its largest Ramstore yet -- a 35,000-square-meter hypermarket.

Exactly one year ago, Global USA launched its controversial "Closing Down" ad campaign, starting rumors the chain had hit rough seas financially. Since then, only one outlet -- a 1,100-square-meter store on Tverskaya Ulitsa -- has shut down, due to high rent rates.
