Moscow Readies For Thaw

Moscow braced itself Thursday to deal with weekend flooding as unseasonably warm weather started to melt this week's heavy snowfalls.

The meteorological center for the city and the surrounding region forecast temperatures of minus 1 degree Celsius to 1 degree for Friday and 1 degree to 3 degrees for Saturday, Interfax reported Thursday. City Hall has instructed road and housing staff to urgently clear all drains so that pools of water do not block roadways, the report said.

Floods have already swamped parts of the southern Krasnodar region, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes, The Associated Press reported. Soldiers used explosives to break up ice so as to release backed-up water in rivers Thursday.

About 820 buildings were under water in several villages along the region's Kuban River, said Oleg Grekov, spokesman for the southern district office of the Emergency Situations Ministry, AP reported. It was the first winter flooding in the area in 50 years, Grekov said.

In the Far East, three fishermen were killed in a cyclone that swept the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, Interfax reported Thursday. Winds reaching 20 meters per second resulted in waves of 4 meters to 5 meters.
