Berezovsky Is Financing the Rebels: FSB

FSB chief Nikolai Patrushev claimed Thursday to have evidence that Boris Berezovsky is financing Chechen rebels.

"We have such information, and it is in large part documented. It concerns first of all financing of illegal armed formations and their leaders," Patrushev said on NTV television.

He said the information would soon be passed on to "our foreign partners."

NTV said the Federal Security Service could seek an international warrant for Berezovsky's arrest based on the accusations.

Patrushev did not elaborate.

Patrushev's announcement came days after Berezovsky-owned TV6 television was shut down following months of legal battles. It also came after Berezovsky recently reiterated allegations that the FSB organized 1999 apartment bombings that killed more than 300 people and were cited as a reason for sending federal troops into Chechnya. The FSB denies the claim.

Berezovsky helped win the release of dozens of hostages in Chechnya in the late 1990s through contacts with Chechen rebels. But he never acknowledged paying any ransoms, saying he sent humanitarian and medical aid, computers and school textbooks to Chechnya. He has denied financing rebel activity.
