Swiss, Germans Probe bin Laden Links

BERN, Switzerland -- As part of a broad probe into the attacks on the United States, the Swiss Federal Prosecutors Office said Monday it is investigating whether any money linked to the terrorists flowed through the country's banks.

The Blick newspaper reported that Al Taqwa Management Organization AG, a financial services company based in the Swiss city of Lugano, had links with the No. 1 suspect in the attacks, Osama bin Laden.

Meanwhile, Germany's stock market regulator said it was looking into claims of suspicious short-selling ahead of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington last week, but said it was too early to say what shares might be involved.

The agency's statement came amid market rumors that bin Laden may have tried to profit from trading ahead of the attacks. Published reports have said European and U.S. investigators were checking stock movements of Germany's Munich Re, Switzerland's Swiss Re and AXA of France.
