Spartak Smashes 5 Past Fakel

Defending champion Spartak Moscow crushed Fakel Voronezh 5-0 Saturday to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Russian international striker Vladimir Beschastnykh and Ukrainian winger Eduard Tsykhmeistruk scored twice in the opening 20 minutes, while Brazilian forward Luis Robson added two more as Spartak built a 4-0 lead before the interval. Tsykhmeistruk then finished off the lowly home side with a 22-meter strike into the top corner in the 69th minute.

The match was played amid tight security after some 1,500 Spartak fans, some as young as 10 years old, rampaged through Voronezh before last year's game between the two teams, smashing shop windows and breaking cars.

Spartak, on 43 points from 22 matches, has a four-point lead in the standings over city rival Lokomotiv, Krylya Sovietov Samara and Zenit St. Petersburg after Zenit suffered a 3-2 defeat at Torpedo Moscow and Loko was held to a 1-1 draw at Alania Vladikavkaz.

Nigerian striker James Obiora put Loko ahead on 30 minutes, but Alania's Djambulat Bazayev leveled eight minutes from time.

Elsewhere, a 22nd-minute penalty by Russian international Andrei Karyaka gave Samara a 1-0 home win over Sokol Saratov.

And for the third straight game, CSKA Moscow was held to a 0-0 draw, this time at Anzhi Makhachkala, a result that enabled CSKA to set a club record of 18 consecutive matches without defeat.

CSKA, however, still has a long way to go to equal the all-time Soviet league record of 45 straight games without defeat, set by Dynamo Kiev in the early 1980s.

CSKA, whose unbeaten run came after four successive defeats at the start of the season, moved into fifth place on 36 points.

Dynamo Moscow halted a seven-game winless streak when it beat Chernomorets Novorossiisk 2-1 at home. The defeat appeared to make relegation a certainty for the Black Sea side, which will make its UEFA Cup debut next month.

It is rooted to the bottom of the table with just 16 points from 22 matches.
