Disegni Chief Flees to France

The offices of El Dorado Group, which controls the Disegni clothing chain, were sealed up last week while prosecutors investigate its director, American Harold Jonassen, who has fled to France.

A former partner of Jonassen, Ruben Kalashyan, claims El Dorado Group's assets were being transferred to other companies affiliated with Jonassen.

Kalashyan, formerly El Dorado's general director, left the company in 1998, but retained his stake. He says Jonassen artificially increased Disegni's production costs through consulting agreements with his own companies, though no such services were provided.

Prosecutors opened an investigation in June under a Criminal Code article dealing with managers not acting in the interests of their organization.

According to Kalashyan, Jonassen plans to bankrupt El Dorado Group —and transfer all its operations assets to Deseini, a joint venture with the German investment company Quadriga Capital Russia, which is managed by two EBRD venture funds.
