Soltys, 27, was found hiding under a table in his mother's backyard, CNN quoted Sacramento County Sheriff Lou Blanas as saying. The report said authorities placed the house under surveillance shortly after the Aug. 20 killings.

Early Thursday local time, as surveillance teams watching the house in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights were changing shifts, they saw family members run out, get into a car and drive to a nearby phone booth, from where they called police, CNN quoted Blanas as saying.

"The brother called and turned him in," Blanas said. "Some of the family were terrified of him, especially the brother."

Soltys, along with his toddler son, had been missing since Monday, when he is suspected of stabbing to death his wife, aunt, uncle and two cousins, 9 and 10 years old.

Later in the week, police found the bloody body of 3-year-old Sergei Soltys in a large box under a light tower in a rural area east of Sacramento.

Authorities posted a $10,000 reward Tuesday and launched a nationwide manhunt.

More than a dozen of Soltys' relatives had been under police protection for the past week.

"We pulled him out ? and he did not try to run or fight," CNN quoted Blanas as saying. "[He] was not combative at all."

Soltys was taken to the sheriff's office for questioning, after which he will be taken to jail, the report said. Blanas said Soltys was dirty and shabbily dressed when police found him.

No weapons linked to the killings have yet been found, according to the report.
