Borodin Meets Pacolli at Questioning

GENEVA ? Former Kremlin aide Pavel Borodin, questioned Thursday for the fifth time in as many months on money-laundering charges, has asked that Swiss bankers and Russian officials be heard as new witnesses, his lawyer said.

Borodin, indicted last April on suspicion of laundering more than $25 million in bribes for handing out lucrative Kremlin renovation contracts to two Swiss-based companies, is seeking to clear his name, his lawyer Dominique Poncet said.

Borodin was expected to invoke his right to remain silent, his lawyers said.

Beghjet Pacolli, the chief executive of construction firm Mabetex who was indicted in June 2000 on related money-laundering charges, appeared for the first time Thursday before investigating magistrate Daniel Devaud.

Borodin and Pacolli greeted each other warmly and spoke in Russian as they waited to appear for the closed-door hearing along with two Geneva asset managers and a local lawyer also indicted in the case begun more than two years ago. No trial date has been set.
