Airport Employees Caught Stealing

Two employees responsible for screening baggage were detained Sunday at Sheremetyevo Airport's international terminal on charges of stealing items from passengers' luggage, airport police said Monday.

Security officials said the women, who have served as luggage screeners for 19 and 11 years, respectively, had been stealing cosmetics, clothes and souvenirs from passengers' bags on a regular basis.

"We've caught them red-handed several times, but according to our laws theft victims must report a theft for us to open a criminal case," airport police spokeswoman Tatyana Bondareva said Monday. "But the robbed passengers have preferred not to do this."

When a man reported a theft Sunday, the items missing from his luggage were found in the two women's possession.

It was not clear who employed the women. Sheremetyevo spokesman Vladislav Lebedev said they are Aeroflot employees, while Aeroflot said they were not employed by the airline.

Bondareva said thefts occur rather frequently at Sheremetyevo. She said another luggage-screener was detained Monday on suspicion of stealing the wallet of a Swiss diplomat.
