Russia Wins Tie to Make Fed Finals

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Russia has taken advantage of the absence of Wimbledon mixed-doubles champion Daniela Hantuchova to win the decisive doubles match against Slovakia on Monday and advance to the Fed Cup finals.

Yelena Likhovtseva and Nadia Petrova overpowered Slovakia's Henrieta Nagyova and Karina Habsudova, winning 6-3, 6-2 in one hour to take the tie 3-2 and earn Russia a place in the eight-team November finals in Madrid.

Slovak coach Peter Vajda switched Hantuchova, who won the Wimbledon title with the Czech Republic's Leos Friedl earlier this month, with Nagyova at the last minute.

On Sunday, Nagyova beat Lina Krasnorutskaya 6-4, 6-3 in a rain-delayed opener carried over from Saturday.

Russian No. 1 Yelena Dementieva then came back from 5-2 down in the second set to beat Hantuchova 6-2, 7-6 to square the tie.

Dementieva then beat Nagyova 6-3, 7-6 and Hantuchova beat Likhovtseva 6-1, 6-3 to set up the doubles showdown.

Russia will join Australia, France, Argentina, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Spain and the United States in the finals.
