Troops Mop Up Chechen Village

ALKHAN-YURT, Chechnya — Troops blocked the village of Alkhan-Kala for a fifth day Sunday while they carried out a mopping-up operation searching for Chechen rebels.

At least 80 people in the village 12 kilometers west of Grozny have been detained so far, residents of Alkhan-Kala said, and several were tortured as they were interrogated by the Russians about ties to the rebels.

Residents said the Russians hanged five people, five locals and three from the nearby village of Alkhan-Yurt at the start of the operation. The reports could not be independently confirmed.

Luisa Saparbekova, a resident of Alkhan-Kala, said her 12-year-old nephew had been tortured with electricity when the troops tried to learn from him the whereabouts of his elder brother, suspected of ties to the rebels.

Interfax said Sunday that a group headed by warlord Arbi Barayev was the target of the operation in Alkhan-Kala. It said Barayev could be among 15 rebels killed in clashes with troops.
